The Story Behind the Coin

LT JG John Patrick Connors USN, a native of Massachusetts, was a brave and dedicated Navy SEAL who tragically lost his life during OPERATION JUST CAUSE in Panama on December 20, 1989. His sacrifice and commitment to his country serve as a testament to the courage and honor of the men and women who serve in the United States military.

Born in a small town in Massachusetts, Connors grew up with a strong sense of patriotism and a desire to protect and serve his country. From an early age, he displayed exceptional physical fitness and a natural aptitude for leadership. These qualities, combined with his unwavering determination, led him to pursue a career in the military.

After graduating from high school, Connors enlisted in the United States Navy, seeking an opportunity to make a difference and contribute to something greater than himself. His passion and dedication soon caught the attention of his superiors, who recognized his potential and recommended him for the rigorous training required to become a Navy SEAL.

Connors excelled in the demanding SEAL training, demonstrating his physical prowess, mental fortitude, and ability to work effectively as part of a team. He embraced the Navy SEAL ethos of "The only easy day was yesterday," pushing himself beyond his limits and inspiring those around him to do the same.

Following his training, Connors was assigned to SEAL Team 4, based in Little Creek, Virginia. He quickly established himself as a respected member of his unit, known for his professionalism, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the mission. He deployed multiple times to various hotspots around the world, always displaying exceptional skill and dedication in the face of adversity.

In December 1989, LT JG Connors USN, found himself deployed to Panama as part of OPERATION JUST CAUSE. The operation aimed to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega from power and restore democracy to the country. Connors and his fellow SEALs were tasked with conducting a variety of critical missions, including reconnaissance, securing key objectives, and neutralizing high-value targets.

During a particularly dangerous operation on December 20, Connors and his team were ambushed by enemy forces. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Connors demonstrated extraordinary bravery and leadership, guiding his team through the chaos of the firefight and inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

Tragically, during the intense battle, Connors was mortally wounded. Despite his injuries, he continued to direct his team, ensuring their safety and the success of the mission. His selflessness and dedication to his fellow SEALs in the face of certain death are a testament to his character and the values he embodied.

LT JG Connors made the ultimate sacrifice that day, giving his life in service to his country and his teammates. His loss was deeply felt by his family, friends, and the entire SEAL community. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, the second-highest military decoration for valor in the United States, for his extraordinary heroism and selflessness.
