What Is The Air Force A&P Certification Program

The Air Force A&P Certification Program is a program that closes the gaps between an Air Force technician's educational backgrounds, training and experience and eligibility requirements for the FAA. The FAA is the Federal Aviation Administration. The program is a voluntary program.

In order to qualify as an A&P Technician, a mechanic has to be 18 and over, be able to read, speak, and understand English, meet the experience or education requirement, and pass a set of required tests within 24 months. Another requirement includes complying with the section of the Mechanics subpart that applies to the rating that the mechanic is seeking. For the portion where mechanics have to utilize their military experience, they can waive the minimum experience requirement that is listed in 65.77 under Mechanic Experience requirements.

The 65.77 Mechanic Experience requirements state that each applicant that is applying for a mechanic certificate or rating should present the correct graduation certificate. They can also present the certificate completion from a certified aviation maintenance technician school or documentary evidence. The second requirement for the Mechanic Experience is for the mechanic must have 18 months of practical experience with the procedures, practices, tools, machine tools, and equipment. These practical experiences should be used in maintaining, constructing, and alternating airframes. It can also be used for constructing, maintaining, and alternating power plants. The final requirement is that a mechanic should have 30 months of practical experience while performing the duties to both airframe and power plant ratings.

When mechanics graduate from their technical schools, they are placed in temporary assigned duties as they learn line operations. This is where they spend a year. While they are there for a year, they learn how to service engines, and learn how to service hydraulic systems. They also complete turn around inspections on airframe and power plant components. After they complete their temporary duties, they go into a Phase Work Center, Corrosion Control Work Center, or the airframes shops. Power plants shops are also used. The Air Force A&P Certification Program comes in a four tier section. This is the training and experience program. This assist mechanics with developing their knowledge, help them prepare for the FAA exams, and assisting them with meeting certification eligibility.

The Air Force A&P Certification Program can take mechanics on a variety of career paths. With the experience gained, aircraft mechanics will become a lead mechanic. They can work for the government, civilian, military, and private contracting industries. They can also become lead inspectors and shop supervisors. Mechanics that have a variety of experience in maintenance and repair can become examiners for the FAA.
